The Stream

Posted by Ian on 2/16/2006
The Stream is a running comic that I use as sort of a comic sketchbook. Actually, drawn in a sketchbook, I use the comic as a way of working out ideas and page layouts. Its good for me as I'm new to drawing comics.
There is one constant character who I create the storyline around. Every time I sit down to work on it, I take the story wherever I feel it should go next (stream of consciousness) and then I number the session (which are the numbers you'll see written in the margins).

I think its interesting to see how the layouts are evolving. I'm starting to get better at it!

I filled in all that black on the bird with the computer. I need to refine my digital editing skills.

Soulmage: Ha. I'm not totally sure what's going on in these but it has definately caught my attention. The detail w/out detail is very cool.

Ian: Well, I want people to be able to follow the story even if its weird. Are the actions not clear enough? He finds a dollar, buys a drink, it trips him out and he has some sort of vision of this spirit bird in the desert. Is there a specific part that seems confusing?

    Rock On!
Maz: This is some killer stuff man. you should be putting this out in print, or at least when you have enough pages.

The story is clear, simple, but that is something people tend to overlook these days. All of the information is relevant to the story, and the art is clear. Nice establishment on the backgrounds!

    Can't wait to see more!

    OH he...
Ian: ... sort of trips out and sees this spirit bird. It is kind of strange. I would love to know how to make that more understandable if anyone has a suggestion.

    Improvements
Maz: It's hard to tell a person what they should do to their own story to make it better. Only you and your writer truly know what it is you're trying to communicate. What I would suggest is to pick up a couple of books by Scott McCloud: Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics and Making Comics.
All three of these books have established everything I know about visual storytelling and how to communicate with the reader in a clear and deliberate way. Everything else will just tell you how to draw or how to write better. These are the only books that really discuss how to make comics specifically.

Ian: Yeah I have Making Comics. Scott McCloud is the man and that is THE best book on the subject.
